Authors’ Checklist for Manuscript Submission to Atmosphere

Authors should use the following checklist guide in order to maximize the chance for their manuscript to be published and to ease our reviewers’ tasks in providing scientifically informed critique. We encourage you to carefully read “Submission guide” and to use A Sample From of Atmosphere given in the submission webpage (http://www.komes.or.kr/treatise_contribute_atmo/treatise_form.php).

General Issues

  • • Is your manuscript carefully proofread?
  • • Did you use the Atmosphere format throughout your manuscript?
  • • Did you double check your references so that all are present, in order, and properly formatted?
  • • Are your figures and tables properly labeled and formatted (e.g., double-spaced for tables)?

Format

  • • Have you checked the journal’s website for instructions to authors regarding specific formatting requirements for submission? Is the entire manuscript-including quotations, references, author note, and figure captions-double-spaced?
  • • Are the title page, abstract, references, appendices, tables, and figures on separate pages (with only one table or figure per page)?
  • • Are all pages numbered in sequence, starting with the title page?

Title Page and Abstract

  • • Does the byline reflect the institution or institutions where the work was conducted?
  • • Does the title page include the article title and byline (author’s affiliation)?
  • • Does the abstract range between 150 and 250 words?
  • • Does 5 keywords are present?

Paragraphs and Headings

  • • Is each paragraph longer than a single sentence but not longer than one manuscript page?
  • • Do the levels of headings accurately reflect the organization of the paper?

Abbreviations

  • • Are unnecessary abbreviations eliminated and necessary ones explained?
  • • Are abbreviations in tables and figures explained in the table notes and figure captions or legends?

References

  • • Are references cited both in text and in the reference list?
  • • Do the text citations and reference list entries agree both in spelling and in date?
  • • Are journal titles in the reference list spelled out according to the journal guideline?
  • • Are the references ordered alphabetically by the authors’ surnames?

Tables and Figures

  • • Does every table column, including the stub column, have a heading?
  • • Are all tables referred to in text?
  • • Are the elements in the figures large enough to remain legible after the figure has been reduced to the width of a journal column or page?
  • • Has the figure been prepared at a resolution sufficient to produce a high-quality image?
  • • Are all figures numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals?
  • • Are all figures and tables mentioned in the text and numbered in the order in which they are mentioned?

Instructions for Authors

Manuscript Type

The manuscripts submitted to the atmosphere are classified into four categories: (1) research article, (2) research/technical note, (3) review and (4) communication.

Contributor

The first and corresponding author should be a regular members member of the Korea Meteorological Society. The maximum number of authors is not limited.

Components of a manuscript

http://www.komes.or.kr/treatise_contribute_atmo/treatise_form.php. Manuscript can be prepared by either Korean or English and must be double spaced with 12 font. All pages must be numbered consecutively with line numbers ("Layout"-"Line number"-"continuous"). Please note that all submitted manuscripts will be screened by Editorial Office to see if they are complete and in proper format. A sample form of a manuscritp, together with detailed instructions for authors, are available on the Atmosphere homepage.

The manuscript should be arranged in the following order:

Manuscript style

Summarized are guidelines for common mistakes found in initial manuscripts. Information for figure size, reference form, and Journal abbreviation is followed. For more information on orders and subscription rates please contact Korean Meteorological Society (KMS) (http://www.komes.or.kr)

1. Section numbering
  • • The Atmosphere uses the following section numbering system.

2. Units
  • • The International System of Units (SI units) is standard. We recommend the following Non-SI units for time: minute=min, hour=h or hr, day=d or day, moth=mo, year=y or yr. It should be consistent throughout the paper.
  • • In particular, note to use the negative exponent rather than a solidus and a space separating the denominator when expressing units like "m s-1", not "m/s". Note "m s-1" is per millisecond, not meters per second.
  • • Note a space between Arabic numerals and units, except degrees latitude and longitude, degrees Celsius, and percentages.
3. Math form
  • • Symbols representing mathematical variables must be of the same font style both in text and equations. Scalar symbols are to be written in italic. Multiple character scalar variables, abbreviations, non-dimensional numbers, and acronyms for variables are to be written in regular Times Roman, and matrix notations are to be expressed by non-italic Arial boldface. Mathematical operator abbreviations / acronyms are to be written in lower-case regular Times Roman font.
  • • Brackets: the following orders are used in equations, { [ ( ) ] }.
Reference style
  • • Reference should be specific and precise. Each reference should be cited in the manuscript at least once.
  • • Order of reference item: Reference should be written in the order of author, year, title, journal name (or publisher), volume, and page. Except for first line, reference text must be indented.
  • • Please be careful on typefaces (i.e., italic, boldface, regular font) used in referefces: Book title, journal name, monograph, conference proceedings should be written in italic. Volume should be written in boldface.
  • • Range of pages (e.g., 121-150) should be provided for journal article and total page numbers provided for monograph.
  • • If reference contains multiple articles of same primary author and they are published in same year they are distinguished each other by putting letter 'a', 'b', 'c'... after the published year.
  • • Editorial board strongly recommends for authors to provide English references.
  • • Reference is provided in alphabetical order. If there are multiple papers of the same first author, it should be ordered in year.
    Example of correct references:
Choi, D.-Y., J.-Y. sung, J.-H Yun, and S.-K. Noh, 2010: Rainfall intensity distribution by time rate in Korea. Proceedings of the 2010 KIIT summer conference, Korean Institute of Informaton Technology, 111-114
Klemp, J.B., and D. R. Durran, 1983: An upper boundary condition permitting intenal gravity wave radiation in numerical mesoscale model. Mon. Wea. Rev., 111, 430-444
    ____, R. B. Wilhelmson, and P. S. Ray, 1981: Observed and numerically simulated structure of a mature supercell thunderstorm. J. Atmos. Sci., 38, 1558-1580
    Sutton, O. G., 1953: Micrometeorology. McGraw-Hill Book Co., 333pp.
5. Date and time
  • • Time, time zone, day, month, and year are written in the form of "1409 UTC 31 January 2009". Local standard time is abbreviated as "LST". However, we recommend UTC rather than LST except it is essential. Use four digits to express time; 1200 UTC is good, but 12 UTC is not good.
  • • The month is always spelled out in the text. Howeber, in figure captions and tables, the month is abbreviated to its first three letters to conserve space.
6. Figure style
  • • Single column figures: Make the width of original figure smaller than 7cm; Figure width of about 7cm gives the best look.
  • • Double column figures: Original figure width should be smaller than 16cm; Figure width of 14~16cm gives the best look.

Submission

Authors are required to submit (MS word file) online at the address. Other correspondences can be e-mailed to Komes.or.kr

Review Process

The submitted manuscript shall be passing through initial screening and quality check by chief editor. The manuscript, which has successfulluy passed, shall be sent to two or three reviewers(those with a doctor's degree on the subject of paper or expert corresponding to that) assigned by chief editor or executive editor of the Atmosphere.

The publication cost depends on the number of pages published: within 5pages, 80,000won is charged. Pages exceeding 5 pages are charged 30,000 won per page. Color page is charged 200,000won per page. 30 reprints (offprints) are provided for free. Additional reprints are provided (55,000won per 50 reprints) if authors request.
